Solo Bitcoin Miner Wins $330K After Renting Hash Power

A solo Bitcoin miner has pulled off an impressive win, earning over $330,000 in block rewards after mining block 899,826 on June 5. The miner used CKpool, a solo mining platform, and likely rented hash power to beat steep odds.

According to Mempool, the block included 3,680 transactions, and the miner earned 3.125 BTC in block subsidy and 0.026 BTC in transaction fees, which makes it a total of $330,386 at the time of writing this report.

The solo miner operated under a wallet address starting with “bc1qa8…” and briefly ramped up their hash rate to 261 PH/s, a huge jump from their normal 6.11 PH/s, which brought a suggestion of suggests they rent extra computing power to increase their chances of winning.

“This hash rate was almost certainly a rental based on there being only one worker, though the account has been mining for a while with a much lower hash rate,” said Con Kolivas, developer and admin of CKpool, in a post on X.

At the time, Bitcoin’s network hash rate was 796 EH/s, giving the solo miner just a 0.03% chance or 1 in 3,050 odds of finding the block. To put it in perspective, this was like winning a lottery in the world of crypto mining.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin mining difficulty hit a record of 126.98 trillion on June 3, reflecting a 4.38% increase since early May.

This makes it even harder for individual miners to succeed. It is also important to note that mining difficulty adjusts every 2,016 blocks and reflects how much computing power is being used across the network.

Despite the odds, this isn’t the first time a solo miner has claimed a big win. In April 2024, one miner beat 1 in 5,000 odds and earned $218,544 at the BTC price at the time calling it “282nd solo block solved”

Just recently, another solo miner solved a block using a small rig that earned 3.15 BTC, which was worth $263,000 at the time for mining block 887,212 on March 10, making it the 297th solo miner to mine a Bitcoin block from the solo.ckpool

Kolivas noted that such wins are rare but not impossible, especially when solo miners strategically rent hash power to take a shot at a block.

With mining difficulty climbing and competition heating up, these solo victories continue to capture the crypto community’s attention, proving that with the right tools, even lone miners can still hit it big.
