Elon Musk Unveils XChat with Bitcoin-Style Encryption

Elon Musk just announced on X that he’s launching a new messaging app called XChat. This app uses Bitcoin-style encryption and is built in Rust, a secure and fast programming language. The beta version of the app has already been rolled out today to selected iOS Premium+ users, appearing in the app’s sidebar.
Musk appears to be pushing XChat as part of his larger vision to turn X into an “everything app,” combining messaging, payments, and more in one place.
“All new XChat is rolling out with encryption, vanishing messages, and the ability to send any kind of file. Also, audio/video calling,” Musk posted on X.

XChat is designed to offer strong privacy. It features end-to-end encryption, disappearing messages, and the ability to send any type of file.
One feature that seems to catch the eye is that users can audio and video calls without needing a phone number. This feature already works across other social media platforms, so users may find it familiar and easy to use.
To activate XChat, users need to set a four-digit PIN. Right now, it works alongside the current Direct Message system on X. Musk confirmed that the team plans to move old DM histories into XChat and eventually shut down the older system.
XChat is still in its beta phase, which means it’s being tested and may still have some bugs. Despite that, it’s already being compared to other popular apps like Signal and Telegram.
One user under the tweet asked Musk’s AI assistant Grok for a comparison with other social media like Signal and Telegram. Grok said: “XChat, Signal, and Telegram differ in features and security. XChat, recently announced, offers end-to-end encryption, vanishing messages, and X integration, but its beta status and lack of audits raise doubts.” Grok added, “Choose Signal for security, Telegram for versatility, or XChat for X users, though its unproven security warrants caution.”
