Chamath Says Ripple or Coinbase Should Buy Circle at $13B

In a recent post on X, Venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya has called the company one of the smartest buys in the crypto space today. He suggested that companies like Ripple or Coinbase should consider acquiring Circle, even at a much higher price.

“If someone can buy it for even $12-13 billion, that’s a steal, imo, for what this business could be worth in 20 years,” he wrote while pointing out the company’s strong infrastructure and long-term value, especially with stablecoin regulation likely coming soon.

This comment comes as Circle seeks to raise $1.1 billion in funding, putting its offering price at $31 per share, which is higher than its previously marketed range.

According to Bloomberg, the IPO is 25 times oversubscribed, pushing Circle’s valuation to roughly $8.1 billion on a fully diluted basis.

Chamath praised Circle for preparing ahead of new U.S. stablecoin laws, including the proposed GENIUS Act. He said, “The company that builds the most efficient infrastructure and sells it for the cheapest: cost-plus (with a thin margin on top) will probably take this market.”

Circle is the issuer of USDC, the second-largest stablecoin in the market, with a supply that has grown from $3 billion in 2020 to over $60 billion in 2025. The monthly transaction has also exploded, hitting $2.3 trillion as of May 2025.

To add to this, there has been speculation around a possible Ripple acquisition of Circle, which all started when Bloomberg reported that Ripple’s initial bid of 4 to 5 million was rejected, with Coinbase allegedly making a counteroffer and Circle taking a stance of “not for sale”

However, Georgetown Law professor Chris Brummer said Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse told him during an on-stage interview at a private event in Las Vegas on June 1 that Ripple “never pursued an acquisition of Circle” and the topic was not under consideration.

Still, rumors persist within the XRP community, with some suggesting that acquiring Circle could massively boost XRP utility.
