BlackRock Bitcoin ETF Hits $70B, Beats Gold Fund Record

BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin ETF, IBIT now holds more than $70 billion in assets. This makes it the fastest exchange-traded fund (ETF) in history to reach that level, having taken only 341 days of trading to get there,

This beats the previous record held by the SPDR Gold Shares ETF, known as GLD, which took 1,691 days to cross the same $70 billion mark.

This achievement was shared by Bloomberg analyst Eric Balchunas, who said in a post on X “just blew through $70b and is now the fastest ETF to ever hit that mark in only 341 days, which is 5x faster than the old record held by GLD of 1,691 days. Nice chart from,”

Since its debut in early 2024, the IBIT fund has rapidly become the biggest Bitcoin ETF on the market, attracting steady interest from investors. Just recently, IBIT saw a 34-day stretch of back-to-back inflows, showing strong demand for the product.

In comparison, the next biggest Bitcoin ETF offered by Fidelity, holds about $31 billion in assets, less than half of what BlackRock’s fund has gathered.

As of May 2025, the IBIT fund held 662,707 BTC, about 3.156% of all the Bitcoin supply. That makes it one of the largest holders of Bitcoin worldwide. However, this BTC is held on behalf of its clients. It does not own Bitcoin directly.

The success of the Bitcoin ETF comes during a time of global economic uncertainty. Over the years, Both Bitcoin and gold have seen price gains in recent months,  partly due to trade policy changes under President Donald Trump’s administration, including new tariffs.

BlackRock’s rapid rise with IBIT shows how investor interest in Bitcoin has grown, especially as more financial tools become available to access the digital asset in a regulated way.

The fund’s record-breaking growth shows how quickly Bitcoin is becoming a more accepted part of mainstream investment portfolios.
